How to Choose the Perfect Photos for AI Model Training
Your AI model is only as good as the photos you train it on. Think of it like giving an artist reference photos — the better and more varied the references, the more accurately they can capture your likeness. Here's a comprehensive guide to selecting the perfect training set.
The Ideal Training Set
For best results, aim for 15-20 photos that meet these criteria:
- Just you: Solo photos only — no other people in the frame
- Clear face: Your face should be clearly visible and unobstructed
- Good lighting: Well-lit photos with minimal harsh shadows
- Sharp focus: No blurry or motion-blurred images
- Recent: Taken within the last 6-12 months to match your current appearance
Variety is Key
The AI learns best from diverse examples. Include variety across these dimensions:
Angles
Don't just upload 20 front-facing selfies. Include:
- 5-6 front-facing photos (looking directly at camera)
- 3-4 slight left turns (about 15-30 degrees)
- 3-4 slight right turns
- 2-3 three-quarter views
- 1-2 slight upward or downward angles
Expressions
Showing different expressions teaches the AI your natural range:
- Natural smile (most important — include several)
- Neutral/relaxed expression
- Slight smile / pleasant expression
- Confident/serious look
Framing
Mix up how much of you is visible:
- Close-up face shots (face fills most of the frame)
- Head-and-shoulders shots
- Half-body shots (waist up)
Photos to Avoid
These types of photos will hurt your model's quality more than they help:
- Group photos: Even if you crop them, the AI can get confused about which features are yours
- Filtered photos: Snapchat, Instagram, or TikTok filters distort your features and confuse the model
- Sunglasses: The AI needs to see your eyes clearly to reproduce them accurately
- Hats covering your forehead: Include one or two at most, but the majority should show your full face and hair
- Extreme lighting: Very dark, backlit, or harsh flash photos
- Old photos: Photos where you look noticeably different from your current appearance
- Screenshots or heavily compressed images: Low-resolution images limit the detail the AI can learn
Quick Quality Checklist
Before uploading, run through this checklist for each photo:
- Is it just me in the photo? (no other people)
- Is my face clearly visible? (no obstructions)
- Is the photo sharp and in focus?
- Is the lighting decent? (not too dark, not washed out)
- Is it unfiltered? (no beauty filters, face-altering effects)
- Does it look like me right now? (recent photo)
If a photo passes all six checks, it's a keeper. If it fails more than one, leave it out.
What Happens After Upload
Once you upload your photos, HyperReal's pipeline automatically:
- Detects and validates faces in each image
- Checks image quality and resolution
- Generates descriptive captions for training
- Trains your personal LoRA model (usually 5-10 minutes)
Better input photos lead to a better-trained model, which leads to more photorealistic generated images. It's worth spending five extra minutes curating your training set.
